Stop Fighting Mother Nature, Create A Drought Resistant Garden For Your Climate
Every area of the country and the world has it’s own unique set of weather and gardening conditions. Wherever you live, a garden of some type makes the yard look better and you enjoy your space more. Nothing is more frustrating than to plant and plant and have things die or get eaten by wild things you have no control over. High water bills are no fun and can break the budget. Many low water municipalities have started using water restrictions with fines for non compliance. Gardening can be a challenge. You may be wise to get professional help, such as landscape architect brisbane.
There are ways to have lovely flower and vegetable gardens in most conditions and locations. What is needed is some thought and planning to make gardens that are happy in your climate conditions. Low water areas are a special challenge, so that is where this advice is aimed at. Creating a drought resistant garden will save you money, water and frustration if you live in a drought prone region. You can go on line and get a long list of drought resistant plants and trees. I found a list 5 pages long. All these plants and trees give you a lot of variety and choices for your garden. If you go to your local green house or garden supply place armed with your list, they can tell you which plants on the list do best in your immediate area. Next you need to prepare the area for your new plants.
Your garden’s success depends on thoroughly planning the garden before planting. Examine your lot and determine the best areas for gardens. Access to water, drainage and ease of getting to the space with soil and other gardening equipment is important. If rock is close to the surface in one spot, but the soil is deeper in another–choose the spot with deeper soil. Mark off the perimeters of the new garden and add compost, nutrients and minerals that are needed and till or shovel up the soil before planting. Now is a good time to install a drip irrigation system to water plants without wasting water in the air.
Plant your garden with careful consideration to each plant’s space, depth and water needs. Group plants with similar needs together. Shorter plants should be planted at the front or edge of the garden and taller ones behind. Make watering wells around trees, shrubs and plant to hold water. Mulch, mulch, mulch and mulch more. Mulching holds in moisture and protects plants.
